STICHTING BEVORDERING WESTFRIESE FOLKLORE IN SCHAGEN (Foundation for the Promotion of West Frisian Folklore)
NEWSLETTER NUMBER 4.
25 JUNE 2016
Weather permitting, the new West Frisian season starts this coming Thursday. The costumes look spick and span and we are really looking forward to it. To make the parades as safe as possible, we have, following the coachmen’s rules, put a number of rules on paper that the ‘walkers’ must observe. It all looks rather strict and official, but each of them is a reasonable and logical agreement that you are required to follow, also for your own safety.
RULES FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE WEST FRISIAN PARADE.
The Stichting ter bevordering van de Westfriese folklore in Schagen (hereinafter SWF) aims to promote West Frisian folklore in the broadest sense of the word and thereby to keep an important part of the local cultural heritage alive.
Remember that in the parade we work with ‘livestock’ (horses); for the safety of participants and spectators the rules below must therefore be observed.
In these rules, ‘participants’ means in particular the ‘walkers’ in the parade. Coachmen have their own rules.
Participants must respect the above aim by dressing in authentic West Frisian traditional costume from the late 19th century (c. 1890 – 1910).
For further information: see the fan leaflet “10 TIPS for wearing West Frisian costume with the matching headdress”.
The SWF board is entitled to refuse participation in the parade if the conditions are not met.
Participants take part in the parade at their own expense and risk.
For the parade to run correctly and safely, it is important that participants keep up and do not leave gaps.
Never stop to pose for photographers and the like, but keep walking.
Follow any instructions from coachmen coming up behind you immediately.
Do NOT make sudden movements or noises that could startle the horses.
Follow the instructions of the board’s representatives, such as how the walkers are divided between the turnouts.
If it rains: never open your umbrella right in front of a horse’s head.
In the event of an emergency: first ensure your own safety and immediately follow the instructions of the emergency services, traffic controllers or board members.
For walkers, the parade ends at the end of the market on the Laan;
leave the parade straight away near the town hall and do not block the road, so that the turnouts can continue on their way undisturbed.
MISS 2016
In a packed Igesz on 16 June, Kirsten Mac Donald was succeeded as Miss West Frisian Folklore 2016 by Linda Mechielsen. A beautiful Miss with an enthusiastic presence, we may well say! Linda, we wish you every success and lots of fun in this role!!!
LAST CHANCE TO BORROW COSTUMES
For those who forgot: you can come to the folklore tower in the Muziektuin one more time to borrow West Frisian costume from the Foundation.
Namely on TUESDAY 28 June from 19:00 to 21:00.
RETURN DATES FOR BORROWED COSTUMES
On Monday 12, Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 September borrowed costumes can be returned to the folklore tower in the Muziektuin.
The deposit will only be refunded if items are returned to the tower on these dates.
Children’s clothing, petticoats, underpants and the black under-caps must be returned washed & ironed. Otherwise the deposit will be withheld.
COFFEE VOUCHER BECOMES DISCOUNT VOUCHER
In consultation with the SES we have changed the text on the coffee voucher from “consumption voucher” to “discount voucher”. The voucher is worth up to €1.50: participating cafés and restaurants may ask for an additional payment for more expensive drinks.
Arie Groen hands out the vouchers at the end of the parade on the right-hand side of the (Stille) Laan.
