Ten summer Thursdays in Schagen, just like around 1900

The West Frisian Folklore

Carriages, costumes, old crafts and dances: every summer Schagen shows how West Friesland lived around 1900.

Every year in July and August, the Foundation for the Promotion of West Frisian Folklore organises ten West Frisian Thursdays, each with its own theme. The day starts early: at half past eight volunteers harness the horses at Museum Vreeburg. At 10:45 the parade sets off with some twenty carriages and hundreds of people in authentic dress, a collection unique in the Netherlands.

Children walk along too, and the wagons and prams are historically accurate. After the parade, the children’s dance group and the West Frisian dance group perform by the church and there is plenty to see on the Markt and in the Nieuwstraat.
