Heritage Day at Vreeburg, 13 September
IN VREEBURG: WASTE NOT, WANT NOT……………
Monuments teach us about the past, and that is why monuments should be preserved for the future.
And just as we want to preserve monuments for the future, we can also ask ourselves how people preserved their food for times to come. In the summer months there is plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, but how did people in the past keep them for the winter months without a fridge or freezer?
With a small additional exhibition, Boerderij- en Rijtuigmuseum Vreeburg (farm and carriage museum), Loet 14 in Schagen, wants to show how our food was “preserved” in those days.
Preserving means making foodstuffs last and keeping them in good condition. A well-known example is “wecken” (bottling in jars), but there were many more methods of making food keep longer.
You can see this during Heritage Day (Open Monumentendag) on Saturday 13 September in Vreeburg, and ……..taste it! The museum is open from 10:00 to 16:30. Admission is free.
