Ten summer Thursdays in Schagen, just like around 1900

STICHTING BEVORDERING WESTFRIESE FOLKLORE IN SCHAGEN (Foundation for the Promotion of West Frisian Folklore)

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 5. 14 AUGUST 2016.

We already have seven West Frisian Thursdays behind us. Unfortunately the weather was often not what we are used to… Three more markets to go and then 2016 is over! Next week is the ring tilting (more on that further on in this Newsletter), then the collectors’ day, and on 1 September we close with the ‘standing’ lunch on the Markt.

RING TILTING
This coming Thursday (18 August) is ring tilting day again. At the moment there are 18 entries, and there may be even more in the coming days. Partly in response to last year’s accident, we are paying extra attention to the safety of participants and spectators.

A few important rules apply to spectators, as set out in the permit granted to us for this day.

These include:

Spectators must stay behind the barriers and behave calmly

Dogs must be kept on a lead

Crossing is only allowed at places where the traffic controllers and folklore volunteers manage it (in front of Igesz/Stiel and near Café ‘t Noord).

If it rains: be careful when opening umbrellas: do NOT do this right in front of a horse’s head

Parking is prohibited for cars in the Handelstraat all day

Bicycles may not be left in the Herenstraat: they will be removed.

For the avoidance of doubt: participants take part at their own expense and risk.

We hope for everyone’s cooperation, so that we can look back on a fine and safe ring tilting.

RETURN DATES FOR BORROWED COSTUMES

On Monday 12, Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 September from 19:00 to 21:00 borrowed costumes can be returned to the folklore tower in the Muziektuin. The deposit will only be refunded if items are returned to the tower on these dates.

Children’s clothing, petticoats, underpants and the black under-caps must be returned washed & ironed. Otherwise the deposit will be withheld.

RETURNING BONNETS AND PRAMS

This can be done on Tuesday 13 September in the folklore tower of the carriage museum in the Muziektuin. Also from 19:00 to 21:00.

CLOSING DAY 1 September

On 1 September Peetoom (De Posthoorn and Het Oude Slot) and Bakkerij Slijkerman (Slijkerman and ’t Are Brood) will once again provide a closing lunch at standing tables on the Markt. Last year this was already a convivial affair, and this time too we are counting on many West Frisians in costume and all the other volunteers who have done their very best again this season. The lunch is free, as it is sponsored by Peetoom and Slijkerman. Come one, come all!!

On behalf of the board,

Rob Hogenes, chairman.
