INSURANCE and so on.

Partly in response to the accident during last year’s ring tilting, the board has looked into the risks and insurance involved in taking part in the West Frisian parades.

1.Participants

All participants take part in the parades ‘at their own expense and risk’.

This means that you must take out any (liability) insurance yourself. A standard personal liability policy usually covers taking part as a pedestrian; this also applies to the recreational use of a ‘horse and carriage’.

2.Board and ‘committee members’

This means board members and those who carry out unpaid tasks ‘on behalf of’ the board, such as the people at the info stall, the ladies of the children’s bread meal, those who organise the children’s dancing and others. For these people the Municipality of Schagen has taken out a ‘collective volunteers’ insurance’. Broadly speaking, this means that in the event of damage or injury this insurance can pay out once it has been established that the person’s own insurance or third-party liability insurance does not pay out.

This collective insurance is a so-called subsidiary or secondary policy!

3.Coachmen taking part in the parade and the ring tilting

Coachmen take part at their own expense and risk.

The parade and the ring tilting take place on public roads in Schagen.

Statutory liability insurance is compulsory for driving a turnout on public roads.

The coachman’s liability insurance must include a clause stating that you are also insured against damage caused by the behaviour of your horse(s).

Please note: insurers respond to this in different ways.

In any case, check it, and if the insurer is not willing to include the clause, have them confirm to you in writing that driving as a coachman during the folklore Thursdays is insured.

So ask your insurer about this.

4.Passengers

Passengers in the carriages in principle take part at their own expense and risk.

We have taken out insurance for them that can pay out in the event of death and/or permanent disability.

5.General subsidiary or secondary liability policy

Should your liability insurance unexpectedly, for whatever reason, not pay out on a liability claim, and there is liability, you can pass the claim on to the liability insurance taken out by the Stichting bevordering Westfriese folklore.

6. Coachman’s/driving certificate

Because in Schagen we use public roads both for the parade and for the ring tilting, we require all our coachmen to hold the coachman’s/driving certificate.
