Newsletter from the chairman

Dear all,
On 19 June we once again enjoyed the annual Miss election. This time at a new venue. Because Alpha was not available, we moved to the auditorium of the Regius College. With the much appreciated help of caretakers Maurice and Tim, the auditorium was made ready for the election. The turnout was very gratifying. Extra chairs had to be brought in. Not only the venue was new, but also the chair of the jury. The undersigned had taken over the baton from Max. Fortunately, Max was close at hand as an adviser and the judging went smoothly. Sandra Bakker from Waarland emerged as the winner. A costume made up of many authentic pieces from around 1900 and a lovely presence earned Sandra the title.
With the new Miss, the countdown has now begun to the first West Frisian Thursday on 3 July. As always, this is the ‘Day of the Old Crafts’ (Dag van de oude ambachten). Of course there is once again the traditional opening lunch (starting at 13:00) at Slot Schagen, preceded by the parade, which (I will say it once more) starts at 10:45. I would like to say a few things about the parade.
First of all, I would like to repeat the ‘rules of conduct’, as I also mentioned them last year.
Do not stop for a photo or a chat;
So do not leave any gaps in the parade;
Leave the parade if, due to tiredness or otherwise, you cannot keep up with the pace;
Be careful when opening umbrellas in the rain;
Behave calmly and quietly, even though the parade is of course an enjoyable occasion.
For the ladies' costume and bonnet fitting, see the following link on our site: https://www.westfriesefolklore.nl/pg-12757-7-140413/pagina/kleding.html
Secondly, I am particularly pleased to report that we have welcomed a number of new coachmen into our midst. Michel Bakker (responsible for the carriages), supported by ‘horse people’ Loek Kramer and Danielle Huijberts, is already busy practising. With good coachmen and equally good horses, we are assured of a safe performance in the parade.
Whereas last year I was able to report the enormous number of 50 children in the children's dance group, this year that number has been easily exceeded. No fewer than 60 children have signed up. So many young newcomers give hope for the future, for whoever has the youth ………
I would also like to make an appeal here. Following the resignation of our treasurer Nel de Vries for health reasons, we are urgently looking for a new treasurer. He or she will have to start next year and can learn the ropes this season from Max Hopmans, who has temporarily taken up his old role again. Hence this appeal to everyone: if you would like to fill this position from next year, or know someone who could and would like to, please let me know.
Finally, I once again wish everyone a wonderful Folklore season!
