Ten summer Thursdays in Schagen, just like around 1900

Farewell poem by Miss Ina Broekhuizen-Slot

Acht bijzond’re donderdage
ging ik bloid nei zonnig Skagen,
stapte op en kreeg een kontje
en den rede we een rondje.
Deftig nei de mense zwaaie,
op ’t pleto je rokke graaie
en maar lache en maar klesse
en met de toeriste swesse.
An de urte op de marrekt
en gienien die d’r den snarrekt.
Ringe telle, proize geve,
al dat moois mocht ik beleve!
Bar bedankt voor deuze dage
’t are jaar kom ’k weer nei Skagen,
deer mag ik toch wel op hope,
enkeld moet ik den weer… lope!

(In West Frisian dialect: eight special Thursdays she happily went to sunny Schagen, was helped up onto the carriage and taken for a ride, waved graciously to the people, gathered her skirts on the platform, laughed and chatted with the tourists, stood for hours at the market without anyone snapping at her, counted rings and handed out prizes. Many thanks for these days; next year she hopes to come back to Schagen, only then she will have to… walk!)
